Everything We Do is Music
– John Cage
Since releasing Agape, I’ve been hit with a creative block.
I can name many reasons, but that’s not the point of this post.
My teacher Oded Zehavi was telling me the other day: “We are not sitting there waiting for inspiration to happen…”.
Another day he said, “There are times when we write good music, and times when we write shitty music, but we write music all the time.”
I’ve been pondering this while being unable to write either good or shitty music. Without inspiration – I’m stuck in front of a blank page, and it stays blank.
Nonetheless, Oded is right. Sitting and waiting for inspiration is not what we do. No. We are composers, and thus – we write music all the time.
Part of writing music is collecting material. Not waiting for inspiration, but going after it. Living life. I ran out of material to write about. There’s no point sitting in front of an empty staff and poking at it randomly.
So I’m doing some programming work (check out IgraLabs, we’re launching a token soon), playing the piano a lot, falling in love, practice my Kong Fu, committing sins, and writing it all down.
One day I’ll turn all that into a piece.
I did not train you to be a demon or a human.
I showed you how to be an artist.
To be an artist is to do one thing only.
Look at me. Cannot fight or weave or farm.
I make swords.
I cook for strength to make good swords.
I study the Sutras to cleanse my heart to make good swords.
